For five years I was a night guard watching Hurricane, Utah self storage units. Hurricane is a quiet place. I didn’t see much happen at night. In fact, it was a pretty boring job… most of the time.
Every couple months the Italian mafia came to get into their storage units. How do I know it was the Italian mafia? Well, they don’t just give you a business card with that printed on it. But they always come in a large van without windows, three or four of them – after dark. Two or three load and unload the van while one walks the perimeter… standing watch I suppose.
Why would the Italian mafia need storage in Hurricane, Utah? It makes perfect sense to me. It’s a quiet, out of the way town just far enough away from Las Vegas that no one would ever suspect it or easily follow them. We are well lit and have top-notch security systems.
No, I’ve never seen a body or a duffel bag of money. And as long as they were well behaved and paid their bill on time, I had no reason to nose into their business or ask what they needed with Hurricane, Utah self storage units.
I learned not to show too much curiosity when they were around, though. Once, shortly after they pulled up to their units, I began my routine drive around. When I came near, a short twitchy man I’d never seen ran over and started questioning me threateningly about what was doing. That was one of the few times I’d ever feared for my life. I prepared to hit the gas if he pulled out a gun, but after a minute another man who knew me came and told the twitcher to leave me alone and let me do my job.
Generally, the mobsters I’ve dealt with have been very friendly and they’re overall good renters. They were some of the few who ever tipped me or expressed appreciation for my vigilance. They never bothered any other renters to my knowledge.
Some may think I let my imagination carry me away. I have other stories about mobsters and their storage in Hurricane, Utah but some things I think I will wait a while before I start blabbing about. The Italian mafia has ways of finding people who talk too much.
